Adoption = Stinky, Part 2

Thankfully, we’re out of that smelly hospital room!

So, we got the results of the EEG and, as expected, there is no seizure activity. On one hand, it’s great, because we’ve ruled out yet another potential cause of some of the girl’s behaviors, which means we’re able to better zero in on the actual problem. On the other hand, it’s still pretty frustrating to have wasted 24 hours sniffing glue.

The good news? I spent time this weekend researching Reactive Attachment Disorder support and found this video by Christine Moers on therapeutic parenting. Most of what she says applies to “regular” kids as well, but as the parent of a RAD child, I found myself shaking with laughter. My abs got a better workout than at Gold’s Gym. I checked out her website, and while I don’t subscribe to all her views, she has some great insight.

I really needed that laugh today. Maybe you do, too. Enjoy!

    I haven’t had the chance to meet you, found you on Casey’s site. It sounds like you have been all the test and still no answers. Have you been tested to Lyme. I spent a year with a neurologist. All of my test were abnormal, she said that was all she could to. I took the abnormalities and narrowed it down to three immune disorders. The test for Lyme will give a false answer 70% of time. If an additional $600 is no problem, have them do you blood sample. You will get the right answer from them, rule in or out. None of this applies, I wish you good karma. If you want to talk, I’m here.

  3. Great way to start the day!
    Wow! I can’t wait to see what is going to happen when I start reciting “George, George, Morrison, Morrison” in the middle of a science lesson. Or I just answer that chattery, diverting question with “Under the pickle.” (Does this strategy work in the middle of a corporate lesson? So far nothing else does. 🙂 )
    I have endless admiration for you, Casey. As teachers we have a break from 3pm to the next day and all weekend. But with great love and devotion comes great reward.

    • 🙂 I already used pickle today! We drive by a closed ice cream shack at least twice a week, and EVERY TIME, the conversation goes:
      Boy: “When I grow up, I want to have an ice cream store. Maybe I’ll reopen that one.”
      Girl: “Why is that ice cream place closed?”
      I explain each time that the ice cream wasn’t very good and the prices were high, and the girl wants to have a discussion about whether I’m correct.
      Today, I said, “Because, pickles.”
      It totally derailed the conversation.
      I’ve decided, though, to use “chocolate.”
      Because, chocolate. (Isn’t that enough of a reason?) 🙂
      Let me know if it works in the classroom–I’m interested to hear how that goes. 😉

      • 😊 Yeah, chocolate. Wonder if I should use something else, but then, “pickles” is so funny! I’m going to try it today. Might not be appropriate in a classroom . . . or as effective. I’ve tried so many other things. I’ll let you know!
