Stranger Danger, Part 1

“Please, can’t I just go sit in the truck?” My daughter had been begging me for the past few minutes and I was fed up. “Fine. Yes, go sit. Don’t talk to any strangers and lock the doors when you get in. I’ll be there in a couple minutes. I just have to pack the rest of the brochures.” She threw her fist jin the air, exultant. “Yessssss!”

I watched her turn the corner to the elevator just as a fortyish gentleman approached in the opposite hall. Leaning against the wall, I waited to see whether he kept walking. He did not. Moments after he disappeared toward the elevators, I heard his voice, then her giggle, followed by her chatter. I don’t think so, buddy.

Quick-stepping toward them, I heard a chime followed by sliding doors. She would get on the elevator with him, oblivious to danger in spite of my many admonishments. I broke into a run.
